How and why did you start running? I started running in January of 2022 when I signed myself and my son up for the Couch To 5K course. I’d been thinking about doing some exercise and wanted to do something I could do with my son. We were initially considering the gym but we decided to give running a go as it’s free and we can do it anytime.
What does running mean to you? Running has been amazing as it has given me head space and clarity and is something I do for me. It has become an integral part of my daily life and I honestly feel like I have found an secret club where everyone is just happy and friendly and accepts everyone whatever your ability. Since starting to run we have also started volunteering at ParkRun and honestly it’s the best start to the weekend, all that positive reinforcement is just the best feeling. I wish I could bottle it!
What are your proudest achievements in your running journey? Week 1 of C25K. I honestly thought it was going to kill me! I did three sets of the one minute runs and I was so far behind everyone, I couldn’t keep up. I was so upset and felt like I could never do it. Coach Sally was really kind and encouraging and told me to keep going even if it was just walking. At the end of the session when we got our homework I genuinely thought there was no way I would ever be able to complete that. Over the next couple of days I was aching all over but on the Friday I decided to give the homework a go. I finally managed the session and was so proud of myself! Over the next couple of weeks I nearly gave up several times but was determined that running wasn’t going to beat me.
What part did MileShy play in your running journey? MileShyClub have been really encouraging and kept me wanting to come back every week, even though I knew I was slow and had to take it at my own pace. Every single coach has always been 100% there for me. Jo, Sally, Kath and Sam have been amazing and honestly if it hadn’t been for their kindness in the first few sessions there’s no way I would have kept at it. MileShyClub is so inclusive of everyone of all abilities and levels. Never in a million years did I think that I would be running a 5K every Tuesday evening!
What advice would you give to new runners? Running is for everyone, if I can do it anyone can! Just believe in yourself, it’s not a race it’s a run but it’s YOUR run just for you and nobody else. Take it at your own pace and don’t stress if you’re at a different level to everybody else, you are there for you and you are amazing!
