How did you first get involved in MileShyClub?
My first run with MileShyClub was on its inaugural day, a cold Sunday morning back in January 2017. I had only been running for a couple of months at that point, just about making it to the end of my road and back. I had never been part of a running club so joining was my first ever experience of being part of a group, little did I know I’d still be involved 5 years later.
What does being a trustee with the MileShyClub mean to you?
My working life has been motivated by my passion to deliver outcomes for the disadvantaged and improving life chances for the most vulnerable. Having worked with charitable organisations throughout my career, I have a long-standing respect for the work they do and the impact they have on peoples’ lives.
On joining MileShyClub, I immediately saw how the club’s vision for supporting local communities was realised. Activity for all has driven the club forward from the very beginning. On joining the club, I quickly became very attached to its volunteers, members and the weekly running opportunities (even getting out of bed on a Sunday morning to actually run!). Unfortunately for me, injury has meant I haven’t been able to participate in running activities for a while but have continued to follow the MileShyClub, admiring its work. I have also supported the club with administration tasks, volunteered for events and managed its social media posts. When the opportunity arose to become a trustee, I jumped at the chance. Having experienced the benefits of being a club member, as a trustee I am now able to use my experience, knowledge and desire to make a difference.
Why do you like being involved with the MileShyClub?
I enjoy being part of MileShyClub because of its inclusivity and its relentless ambition to reach people who may not have otherwise had an opportunity to experience running as part of a group. The community MileShyClub has created provides me a strong sense of belonging and provided me with some fantastic friends.
What do you do outside of the MileShyClub?
Outside of MileShyClub I like to spend time with my family, walking around National Trust parks and visiting the galleries around Manchester. I love all things ‘interiors related’ and often cajole my husband into my many DIY / renovation projects.
How did you start running?
I started running in October 2016, (the word running used very loosely, my running technique would be better described as a gentle jog). Initially I ran to the end of my road, then to the park and finally progressing to a couple of laps. I joined MileShyClub in January 2017 after much deliberation as I had never experienced running with a group of strangers. Being part of the club not only helped me develop my running skills, it offered me new connections, new friendships and new opportunities.
What is your greatest achievement or proudest moment with the MileShyClub?
Completing the Manchester half-marathon, something that I would not have achieved without the nurture and support of MileShyClub and its fantastic members. I am also proud of my continued involvement in the ParkRun movement, not just as a participant but also as a volunteer. I wouldn’t have discovered my love for Saturday morning 5K’s without MileShyClub.
