After this Summer’s sweltering heatwave, it felt immensely rewarding today for our runners as the majority of them achieved personal best times at the UKFast Salford 10k. After training in blistering temperatures throughout the Summer months, the hard work clearly paid off with sprint finishes on the last leg. Well done all!
#MileShyClub attends England Athletics Volunteer Pilot Workshop
Today, Jane from the #MileShyClub attended a workshop with other representatives from running clubs around the region to discuss how best to recruit, retain and reward volunteers. We value our volunteers hugely and were delighted to connect with like minded people! From learning about ‘volunteer trees’ and assigning volunteers tasks and not roles, we were able to brainstorm a variety of ideas which we will be using over the coming months. A worthwhile session!
#MileShyClub Sale expands to provide 1-2-1 support for those with mental health difficulties
Club founder Jane was appointed a Mental Health Champion with England Athletics last year, and the #MileShyClub is pleased to announce that Trish from the Club has now also been appointed a Mental Health Champion. We are starting a new mental health #runandtalk initiative here at the club which began at the weekend, and which Trish is going to be looking after!
We appreciate that for some of our runners, the thought of just getting to one of our sessions can seem a step too much. For most first timers, trying running for the first time can be daunting, but for some it might just feel impossible. Therefore, Trish is going to be on hand to give 1-2-1 support at our running sessions. Trish will answer any questions you might have ahead of the session, and she will be able to help you through your first steps with us as a club. Sound good? Trish has given us permission to share her email with you, and if you want to arrange an appointment with her for when you do come to see us, please do drop her a line. Trish is at: trishcanny@hotmail.com
We are keen to develop this further and are on the look out for anyone who wants to volunteer as a Mental Health Champion. Full training is provided, with the potential for further training (subject to our funding). If you would like to explore the possibility of being involved, please email the club at hello@mileshyclub.com
The #MileShyClub wins Post Office community competition
We were gobsmacked to be picked as one of 100 organisations in the UK to receive £1,000 of funding from the Post Office! Every penny of this award will be used to make sure we continue to deliver exceptional running coaching to our new and existing runners, across the country. Thanks so much to the judging panel for these much needed funds.
Volunteering at ATC Trafford Trails
A group of our runners volunteered over the course of this weekend at the ATC Trafford Trails! It was great to give something back to the community and help get the races up and running! Some us really got into the marshalling spirit... https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1706422086077954&id=1093199720733530
Collaborating with Winston Runners
We had a lovely session with WInston Runners who invited us down to use their track for a Tueday session! It was great to learn from other clubs and see the different techniques they employ, as well as sharing our own tips and providing feedback! We're looking forward to welcoming Winston Runners to our club at the end of August, watch this space!
An emotional Race for Life
What a fantastic morning! A bunch of us braved the hot weather and ran (an emotional and super worthwhile) 10k Race for Life at Heaton Park! And at the same time, another couple of groups met at the normal Sunday session and survived a fantastic morning with coach Gordy! Welcome to our newbies and kudos all round to everyone who ran today! #raceforlife
3 #MileShyClub coaches qualified as Guide Runners
Coaches Bram and Jane now join Andy in qualifying as Guide Runners this evening, able to take the visually impaired out running for the first time. We as a club are delighted with this achievement because it means we can bring the sport of running to more people, regardless of disability. If you are thinking of giving us a go, whether you have a visual impairement or not, please do get in touch with us and let us know!
What do you get if you cross great company, great food and a canal cruise? The #MileShyClub Summer social!
Tonight our runners feasted on a two course meal and for once did not bemoan the glorious sunshine that lasted long into the evening. We had a tranquil cruise along the Bridgewater canal, right next to where our Sale Club usually runs. Earlier in the evening, we also had our first ever club AGM!
Sizzling hot!
A few brave and hardy souls took on the first Sale Sizzler this evening at Wythenshawe Park. This 5k race is known to "test the best of them" and we were not disappointed with this fast course. We even had an added bonus when coach Gordy won a pair of trainers! Very well organised race and lots of fun. We'll be back!
