Our second visit to #ParkRun Wythenshawe saw ALL #MileShyClub runners acquire PB's!

We brought the sunny weather again today to #ParkRun at Wythenshawe which saw an amazing turnout.  Runners from last month's Club #parkrun and newbies took to the start line and everyone finished in epic style with personal bests all round. Again, another amazing day, with a really supportive crowd.  Here at the Club we wait for everyone to finish (and give them a cheer!) Great results today which reflect the hard work of our runners.  Well done everyone. (Click on the photos below to scroll through).

Jane from the Club appointed a Mental Health Ambassador for England Athletics and MIND

We're really pleased... in fact, super-excited(!) to announce that on Monday this week, Jane at the club was appointed a Mental Health Ambassador for England Athletics. This means that Jane (and the #MileShyClub) will be working with England Athletics and the charity MIND to bring more people, particularly those with mental health issues into the sport of running. Jogging and running can help us lift our mood, increase our self-esteem, sleep better, think clearer and reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Jane herself has personal experience of mental health issues and is able to support you to start, return, or continue running in a club or group.

Everyone remembers their first run...

But sometimes taking the first step is the hardest bit.

Come and talk to us. #runandtalk

The #MileShyClub completes their first ever #ParkRun!

Runners from the club who started as complete beginners at the beginning of 2017 visited ParkRun this Saturday.  Full of nerves, the 10 hardy souls (plus one other we acquired on route!) completed their first ever 5k runs through mud, grass, and sunshine! Below are a few photos and video from the day! Amazing achievement, we can't wait until next month's outing! Thanks ever so much to Wythenshawe #ParkRun who welcomed us with open arms on the day and gave us a special mention.

The #MileShyClub gets bigger across Saletown!

Colour coded cones, group warm-ups and 1 mile run along the canal by the not-for-profit Mile Shy Club to give you techniques and help to get you into running!

The MileShyClub is a running club aimed at those who want to give running a try, or as Jane Wilby-Palmer, the club owner says, ‘for those who have tried and sworn never to run again!’

Currently based in Sale, at the Sale Waterside, the Club has started to gain a positive reputation for its colour coded cones and group warm-ups that are now a regular feature by the canal at 9am on Sunday morning’s.

Jane is a recently qualified running coach and fitness instructor who left her full-time job last year to set up the not-for-profit organisation with a desire to bring the sport of running to everyone.

‘I love running and only came to the sport around 10 years ago after deciding the 20-a-day smoking habit had to go.  It gave me some ‘me-time’ when raising the kids, kept me fairly fit, was way cheaper than a gym… and ultimately had a transformative effect on making my life great.  I became one of those [whispers] marathon runners, and even a [whispers again] running blogger, and I got to a point last year where I just decided that I had to find a way to shout about and show others how great this sport really is.’

So, summarise a typical 9am Sunday morning session.

‘Our 9am session involves very little running initially; we do a group warm-up with teaching points on running technique and then off we go for a run/walk with the coloured cones along a mile route, followed by a cool down and post-workout stretches, which again are taught.  It’s about giving people the skills they need to continue their fitness journey, whether that be with the MileShyClub or one of the other great running clubs in the area.’

The club has been so popular that Jane is proud to highlight that a group from the club are now moving to a 10.15am session, to focus on running 2 miles.

‘And then when we’re ready, we’re going to try out a local ParkRun,’ she says with a smile.

Think you can't run? Don't fear, #MileShyClub is here

Published by Sale Messenger Newspapers

RUNNING is one of those things that can seem like an impossible task – but not if you are in the MileShyClub.

Jane Wilby-Palmer, a marathon runner and recently-qualified running coach and fitness instructor, is pushing her new not-for-profit running club, aptly named the MileShyClub, to everyone who thinks that they can’t run.

The “complete beginner” running club meets every Sunday at Sale Waterside, opposite the Slug & Lettuce at 9am.

“Running is one of those activities that people say they can’t do, and there’s a lot of admiration for those who do,” said Jane.

“Most people give up after their first run, and decide they are more suited to the confined space of a gym, before losing the will to live and giving up completely.”

The club took off at the start of January and is going from strength-to-strength.

“We had an amazing turn out on day one,” said Jane. “33 people from Sale and the surrounding areas just wandered up to the canal at 9am and we just had an absolute blast.’

The running club has had to move quickly with demand, and despite rain, snow and even ice, a new 10.15am session starts this weekend for those who turned out at the beginning and are now progressing to their second mile.

“We trialled a coloured coned route along the canal for members to run/walk their session, and each week for those who wanted, homework handouts based on the NHS Couch to 5k programme were distributed,” added Jane. “Some of our members are working their way up the different coloured coned routes which has proved popular and a good way to bring a bit of fun to running.”

Jane said many of her members are wanting to continue toward the 5k and once they have reached this, they will go to Park Run.

“The club however, is firmly committed to bringing the sport of running to anyone who wants to try it, and we’ll be there at 9am by the Sale Waterside, opposite the Slug and Lettuce for anyone wanting to give it a go,” she added.
