MILESHYCLUB IN NATIONAL BBC CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE THE NHS COUCH TO 5K APP

A few weeks ago a BBC producer contacted us and said they’d love to collaborate with us on a new project. We are absolutely thrilled to announce that MileShyClub runners will be featuring in a new BBC campaign to relaunch the Couch To 5K app! We’ll be in a brand new advert, as well as being interviewed across coverage of the World Athletics Championships, the London Marathon and the Great Manchester Run.

It was so hard to choose who to put in front of the camera from all of the amazing people that make up the MileShy community, but here are the face you’ll be seeing on your TV screen soon! All eight people in the photo represent MileShy through and through. You’ve got Mike, former Dean of the University of Manchester and trainee run coach – he’s 75. Razia, MileShy trustee dedicated to getting more Muslim women running. Dr Louise Grant, just one of the GPs running with us and practicing what they preach. Coach Kerry who lost five stone and is now training for Manchester Marathon. Coach Mark, the life and soul of the party who also talks openly about his mental health. The other Mark, who says that running saved his life and is my “wild card”. Vladi, one of the many Eastern Europeans accessing our club. And Vicky, a born and bred Ordsall resident who started this “running thing” with her sister, Billie-Jo at the end of last year.

There’s more planned and more happening with the BBC - watch this space!

GO TEAM MILESHY!

MILESHYCLUB STEPS INTO THREE BOROUGHS - FIND US IN SALFORD, TRAFFORD AND MANCHESTER!

MileShyClub, the running and walking club for beginners, today announced the launch of five new beginner running clubs coming to Salford, Manchester and Trafford this September.

The award-winning club already has ten clubs across much of the borough of Trafford, with five beginner run clubs in Sale, Urmston, Old Trafford, Partington and Stretford plus five beginner walking clubs in Sale, Stretford, Old Trafford, Trafford Centre and Wythenshawe.  In addition to these clubs, MileShyClub also regularly collaborate with other VCSE organisations in the local area including GM Ringway for a monthly walk in Longford Park (Stretford) and GreaterSports’ Right to the Streets Project in Gorse Hill Park (Stretford).

Club founder and CEO, Jane Dennison said,

“Like with many other organisations in the health and wellbeing sector, we experienced funding cuts this year which placed our walking clubs at risk. Therefore, we’ve had to get creative to look at ways to raise funds to keep our clubs going.  Opening more beginner running clubs was a natural move as they’re always well attended and super popular, but remain affordable at £2 a session, pay as you go”.

With previous experience working in Salford for the social enterprise Beyond Empower (a service which supports disabled people to get active), Jane Dennison has wanted to make a move into the area for a while.  She left the service in April this year to focus on opening the new clubs.

“I am so pleased that Sport England got behind us to make this move into Salford.  It was easy to sell the idea of a new club in Altrincham as we’ve had people there wanting us there for a couple of years now, and the Altrincham Funeral Partners Fund backed us, thanks to Forever Manchester.  We were also successful with The Big Life group and were able to start a walking club in July, with the run club to follow in September.”

MILESHYCLUB RUNNERS JOIN TOGETHER FOR A BANK HOLIDAY TRAIL RUN AROUND TATTON PARK!

Earlier this week on Bank Holiday Monday Coach Charlotte arranged a beautiful trail run from Knutsford to Tatton Park and back and a great time was had by all. We loved that there were runners from all of our clubs there, the whole MileShy Community came out for a spectacular run on the trails!

Our next Bank Holiday get together will be Coach Dennis’ always amazing Bank Holiday Monday MileShy MashUp on Monday 29th May, starting from Victoria Park in Stretford at 6.30pm. See you all there!

MILESHYONTOUR AT SUTTON MANOR PARKRUN - WHAT A "DREAM"Y DAY!

Last weekend we took MileShyOnTour to Sutton Manor parkrun and we had an amazing turnout! It was great to see so many bee tees out on the course and we absolutely loved that we had runners from every single one of our clubs come along to run as one big MileShy community!

We were almost wholly responsible for a huge increase in Sutton Manor’s numbers with the event being reported on one of the Facebook Parkrun Tourism groups as having an increase in attendance of 115% compared to the previous week! Sutton Manor is only a little parkrun with an average of 66 runners a week but we’d highly recommend it for the views which include running round the amazing Dream sculpture. The course is a tad hilly, but we all know how good running hills is for your training! HUGE well done to all of our runners that absolutely smashed their runs and contributed to a fabulous social event!

The next MileShyOnTour is coming.. watch this space!

MILESHYCLUB DOES MANCHESTER MARATHON

What a day we had at the Manchester Marathon! We had more than FIFTY MileShyers out on the course with twelve superheroes running the whole 26.2 miles and ten teams of four runners running the relays. We are super proud of each and every one of you!

We were also represented on the volunteer front with Coach Tara heading up a team of MileShy volunteers that were positioned in the Dane Road/Glebelands Road area of Sale keeping everybody safe and cheering all the runners on. As always the MileShy community was out in full force along the route with cheer squads in Timperley, Sale and Stretford cheering everybody on and picking out our neon tees for an extra loud MileShy cheer as our runners passed.

Our relay runners spent the down time at the relay points talking to runners from other clubs and we had lots of compliments about our tees and the “NoOne Gets Left Behind” ethos. One of the marshals commented she’d never seen so many relay teams from one club before which just goes to show what a fantastic community we have - this was also evidenced further when one lady joined the Facebook group just to thank one of our runners that had given her a banana for fuel at one of the relay points. Well done Jude!

Just an amazing day! We’ve already heard and seen lots of conversations about next year’s relay teams with some people even expressing interest in doing the two leg half marathon distance relays - we love that you were all so inspired by the event and can’t wait for next year!

MILESHYCLUB'S FIRST COUCH TO 5K OF 2023!

COUCH TO 5K DONE

What an AMAZING turnout we had for our C25Kers graduation at Alexandra parkrun this weekend! So many of you came down to support our newest MileShyers by running with them, cheering them on from the sidelines and cheering them on whilst volunteering out on the course. You’re all just brilliant!

HUGE well done to all of our C25Kers that absolutely smashed their graduation run.. we’re so proud of you all and can’t wait to see you in the 5K Improver groups! There were even more celebrations at Alexandra on Saturday as Coach Jo ran her 100th parkrun, runner David ran his 50th and runner Paul ran his 25th parkrun. Amazing!

HUGE thanks to the core team at Alexandra parkrun, Moss Side for making such a fuss of our first timers and for putting on an extra First Timer’s Briefing for us - you made our newest runners feel really welcome and illustrated what parkrun is all about!

HUGE thanks also to all of our incredible volunteer coaches for everything you do. We couldn’t do it without you all. We can’t wait to do it all over again in May!

MILESHYCLUB'S BIGGEST AND BEST YEAR TO DATE!

2022 has been the most significant year for the MileShyClub. We celebrated our 5th birthday with ridiculous amounts of cake and unlike some other charities, we survived lockdown. We supported ourselves and each other throughout the pandemic and comforted those who lost loved ones. 2022 has been the year we have been able to continue to support those recovering from covid – not jut physically, but mentally too.

We started the year as we meant to go on and equipped our coaches with life saving first aid skills and even funded other organisations to do the same. We recognised that we lacked diversity on our Board, as well as support to help us continue to grow so we appointed Parveen Earl, Head of Strategy for the Home Office, and Razia Shaikh-Patel, who empowers Muslim women through the use of creative arts with her charity Weta.

We saw our largest Couch To 5K graduate turnout ever at Alexandra ParkRun in March with so many first timers we had to post out some goody bags because the 70 prepared weren’t enough!

Significantly for us, in March we also acquired funding to establish five beginner walking groups across Trafford.  These groups are specifically for people with long term health conditions, for the beginners coming back to exercise or just trying it out.  We’ve now got three walking coaches supporting these groups, as well as a sixth group which takes place indoors at the Trafford Centre and is predominantly attended by people with disabilities. This year, our club, our charity has supported people with life changing health diagnoses, it has provided a safe welcoming space, it has supported those with mental health illness. We have worked with other amazing local charities such as the Trafford Carers Centre, Blu Sci, Voice of BME Trafford as well as GP surgeries.  We have made a difference.

But enough now about walking, because we’ve also done a heck of a lot of running! We did MileShyOnTours to Delamere parkrun, Lyme parkrun, then we did the Trafford 10K, Manchester Marathon, Manchester 10K, Manchester Half, Great North Run, Alton Towers 10K, Altrincham 10K, Chester Half and Marathon, London Marathon, Manchester 24 Hour Run Against Homelessness, two Dog Runs, Summer trail runs, Wilmslow Festive 10K, not forgetting our amazing Santa Dash which raised £1,262 for 3 Dads and PAPYRUS. On top of all that, we still liked spending time with each other and managed a not so Silent Disco tour!

Some of us did some pretty incredible things too – Victoria did the Chicago Marathon, new coach Ruth a did 52K, Dennis did what Dennis does and ran so much we can’t include it all here (but he did do 40 miles last month at the Warrington Way Ultra) and Lisa got a sub one-hour 10K. Coach Ian showed true grit and determination by staying positive even when his running was impacted by covid. Trustee Tony is even running 5K every day to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

Whilst these successes are incredible in their own right, the overall winners at our club are those who visit us for the first time and try something new.  Those who find it incredibly hard to leave the front door, to meet new people, to commit to a change.  Whether it’s a marathon, 5K, or a first mile of walking, there have been some incredible success stories this year and we are proud of every single one of you. We’ve had 816 people sign up this year, and that’s just the runners.

Like we said, our best year ever. We cannot wait for 2023!

MILESHYCLUB'S FIRST APPRECIATION AWARD

We have an awards ceremony every year to celebrate the successes of our runners, our coaches and the club. We’ve had to do things a little differently this year because as we’ve grown so much in the last twelve months it’s no longer feasible to ask our members to vote for their favourite coach as it just wouldn’t be fair on the coaches of the smaller clubs.

Therefore, we have pinched an idea from Sale Harriers, which is a well-known athletics club that has been in existence for over 100 years.  They award an ‘Appreciation Award’ to one of their volunteer team every year and as the years go on, they add the names to a trophy. We decided to invest a little bit of money into making an extra special trophy for this purpose.

When deliberating about who would won this year’s award we sought feedback from different members of the team about this person and this is what they had to say:

“This person is a great coach, friend to everyone and encourager.  They have been instrumental in my running journey and have believed in me, even when I haven’t believed in myself.  This person gives up so many of their own runs to make sure others get the best out of theirs. A machine, this person has overcome many injuries to complete races. “

“This person has been my life saver over the last few years making sure I got out for a run whether it be doing a short 5k or training for the half. This person knows I don’t like running on my own & always makes time & will even come for a run with me after already doing a long run beforehand.”

“When we go on our runs she says she’ll run at my pace but I end up running hers. Even though I can’t breathe I know it’s her way of pushing me to make me help with my speed. I know this has helped as my times are improving all the time with each race I do. She has given up many a race to drag me round & will never let me give up which I have been truly grateful for (sometimes).”

“I first met this lady at the Sale Sizzlers races and the MileShy journey started from there.  A true winner, and faster runner than me, this person is always ready to step in and support with coaching, even at our Old Trafford club when we are short.  This person is a regular volunteer not just for us, but also Parkrun.  We are very grateful for the time and husband negotiations that go on behind closed doors so that she can support us.”

The Appreciation Award for 2022 goes to Samina Ahmad. Thankyou Sam for everything that you do.

MILESHYCLUB'S BIGGEST AND BEST SANTA DASH EVER!

We had an AMAZING day on Sunday at our Sale Santa Dash! Thankyou so much to everybody that came down and took part, we were so impressed with all the effort that went into the costumes!

We are so chuffed to confirm that the total amount raised from ticket sales and donations on the day was an amazing £1,262.48, the most we've ever raised from the Santa Dash! All proceeds were donated to 3 Dads Walking and PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide.

Huge thanks also to everybody who donated to the food bank and pet food bank collections. We dropped off the donations to Sale West Food Bank and the Rainbow Café Pet Food Bank in Partington yesterday. We also gave the food bank in Sale all our leftover goody bags which contained sweets and crafts for kids (and adults!) which are going to be used at Christmas events across Sale.

All photos from the day (and previous years), can be found HERE We can't thank our photographer Derek Stuart-Cole enough for giving up his time to come out and support the event every year (in the cold!).

We also have to thank all of our amazing sponsors: VCM Graphic Design GRIPADVENTURE.co.uk Sale Podiatry Dapper Dogs The Boathouse Restaurant Diddibox Flowers B&V Trading TreeTops Café Rudy's Pizza Napoletana - Sale , Sammy Burns for the gazebo and table loans and Ian Thomas Yarwood for van hire and printing flyers. Thank you to Mike Palmer from 3 Dads and the Papyrus volunteers. We also are totally grateful to our amazing #MileShyClub volunteers who gave up their time to do a multitude of tasks from organising the races (@mrsmileshy aka Jane Dennison), handing out flyers at the Makers Market (Tara), preparing goody bags, to marshalling on the day, being visited by the fantastic Santa, and the "not so" fantastic Grinch Frank Tsang and making tough decisions over fancy dress prizes. Thank you to: Alison, Andy, Angela, Annette, Bram, Charlotte, Cheryl, Clare C, Clare L, Jill, Jo, Kath, Kerry and Archie, Lin, Mark B, Mark O, Pam , Rach , Ruth , Sally M, Sally T, Sam, Sasha and Tracey. Thanks also to BBC Radio Manchester for featuring us ahead of the day and to Granada Reports who reported on the event on their website. We also mustn't forget Trafford Council who give us permission to use the space at the gorgeous Sale Water Park. We really hope we haven't forgotten anyone!

We can’t wait to do it all over again in 2023!

MILESHYCLUB MEETS MR MOTIVATOR!

Our running clubs have had a super busy month in November. First up we had our latest Couch To 5K graduation run at Stretford ParkRun which had a fantastic turn out with lots of runners from all clubs attending to support our newest MileShyers.

Later in the month we took part in the Manchester 24 Hour Run Against Homelessness which raised almost £10,000 for the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity “A Bed Every Night” scheme. Our Old Trafford walking group took part in a walking wave early in the afternoon and we had a large group of runners flying the MileShy flag early evening. It was amazing to see the running community come together for such a great cause.

We also had some of our runners involved in filming for the BBC talking about how being active can improve your health. Our runners even got to meet the amazing Mr Motivator! We’re really looking forward to being part of the programme.

Later in the month one of our runners, Aggie, told us about hardcore runner Gary McKee who would be attending Stretford parkrun as part of his “Three Six Five” challenge where he is running 365 marathons in 365 days to raise funds for Macmillan. Of course we had to rally our runners and lots of us went down to support his fantastic effort, some of us were even lucky enough to run with him for a little while.

As well as all these amazing events we have still had great attendance at all six of our clubs despite the dark nights and wet weather, what a hardy bunch you all are! Our Facebook and Instagram feeds are always buzzing with our runners out on social runs, participating in races and attending parkruns here, there and everywhere!

If you’re still thinking of joining us just sign up and come on down!
